The Vedas are the sacred scriptures of Hinduism, consisting of four main texts: Ṛgveda, Sāmaveda, Yajurveda, and Atharvaveda. Each Veda is divided into four parts: Saṁhitā, Brāhmana, Āranyaka, and Upaniṣads. The Upaniṣads are mystical texts that delve into the nature of ultimate reality and the essence of human existence. One of the principal Upaniṣads is the Īśa Upaniṣad, also known as the Īśāvāsya Upaniṣad, named after its opening word. It belongs to the Śukla Yajurveda. This Upaniṣad is unique as it is part of the Śukla Yajurveda Saṁhitā despite being an Upaniṣad. The Śukla Yajurveda Saṁhitā consists of forty chapters, with this Upaniṣad serving as the final chapter. With only 18 verses, it is a concise yet profound treatise. The English translation used in this book is sourced from Robert Ernest Hume's "The Thirteen Principal Upanishads," published in 1921. The text formatting has been adjusted to ensure consistency. We have included the invocation section at the beginning but have omitted the footnotes to ensure simplicity and readability. Additionally, we have added the original Sanskrit verses in the Devanagari script, accompanied by Sanskrit transliteration.
