Part One of this book is intended as an introduction to phenomenological literary criticism. Its audience will include, I hope, specialists in American and English literature who want to learn more about Continental letters. Part one is the only attempt in English to describe phenomenological criticism(both French and German) in synoptic terms. Thus I believe it holds interest too for specialists in European criticism.
My Part Two, on phenomenological literary theory, fills another need of the academic community-the need for English-language commentaries on Roman Ingarden and Mikel Dufrenne. I exam The Literary Work of Art and The phenomenology of Aesthetic Experience, respectively. Part Two assays this function and parallels it with evaluation and comparative analysis. Ultimately, the second part is a comparative study of four phenomenologists, Edmund Husserl, Roman INgarden, Mikel dufrenne, and Martin Heidegger, and one non-phenomenologist, E.D. Hirsch, included because his work bears so heavily on the topics in point.
